The 7 Questions Your LMS Should Be Answering About Your Training Program
Most L&D teams have an LMS. Far fewer have an LMS that can answer the questions that actually matter to the business.
If you have ever sat in front of your LMS reporting console trying to answer a senior leader’s seemingly simple question — and ended up exporting CSVs into Excel for an hour — you already know the gap. The LMS is brilliant at delivering courses. It is often less brilliant at telling you whether those courses are doing their job.
Here are seven questions every L&D team should be able to answer in under a minute. If yours can’t, the gap probably isn’t your LMS — it is the reporting and analytics layer sitting on top of it.
1. Are people completing what we asked them to complete?
Sounds basic. Often isn’t. Completion data is fragmented across course-level reports, cohort-level views, and program-level rollups. The team running new-hire onboarding shouldn’t need to download three reports and pivot a spreadsheet to see whether their last cohort finished. They should see one number, filtered by cohort, in seconds.
2. Where are people getting stuck?
When completion drops, you need to know whether it’s one course, one module, or one specific quiz that’s the bottleneck. Drop-off analysis isn’t just useful — it’s the difference between fixing the actual problem and adjusting the wrong variable.
3. Are managers’ direct reports staying current on required training?
Compliance and certification training are managed at the team level. The manager of a twelve-person team needs to see, at a glance, who’s overdue, whose certification is about to expire, and who’s on track. Critically, they should only see their team — not every team in the company.
4. How much time are learners actually spending?
Not how long they were logged in. How long they were genuinely engaged. The distinction matters for two reasons: regulators care (seat-time is often a legal requirement), and engagement analytics get distorted when an idle session is counted as 90 minutes of learning.
5. Which content is engaging — and which is being ignored?
You probably published a hundred courses last year. Some are essential, some are aspirational, and some — be honest — nobody opened. Knowing which is which is how you stop spending money on content nobody uses.
6. Are we ready for our next compliance audit?
When the auditor calls, you shouldn’t need three weeks to assemble the evidence. Notice what these questions have in common. They aren’t about the courses themselves — they’re about the relationship between training and the business. They cut across cohorts, departments, hierarchies, time periods, and sometimes external systems entirely.
Stock LMS reports tend to be built around courses: list of completions, list of grades, list of enrolments. That’s necessary but insufficient. The questions that move the business are about people, programs, and outcomes. A reporting layer designed for those questions looks different. It comes with the LMS schema mapped. The honest assessment
