A learner logs into your compliance training at 9:00 AM and logs out at 10:30 AM. The system reports 90 minutes of training time. Easy.
Except: were they actually learning for 90 minutes? Or did they open the course, walk away to grab coffee, take a phone call, eat lunch, and come back at 10:25 to click “Mark complete”?
This isn’t a hypothetical. It’s the single biggest distortion in LMS engagement reporting — and for organizations with regulatory training requirements, it’s a serious compliance risk.
Most LMSs report “time spent” as session duration: time of last action minus time of first action. It’s easy to calculate and it’s almost always wrong.
The error compounds when learners leave courses open in browser tabs while doing other work, when sessions auto-extend until the user actively logs out, when learners use multiple devices or tabs, or when self-paced content has no enforced engagement check.
The result is reports that overstate actual learning time, often by two to five times. For internal engagement metrics this is annoying but tolerable. For compliance reporting, it’s potentially indefensible.
Many compliance training requirements specify minimum seat-time — 30 minutes for harassment prevention, four hours for HIPAA, varying amounts for industry-specific regulations. The regulator’s expectation isn’t that the learner had the course open for 30 minutes. It’s that the learner was engaged for 30 minutes.
If you’re audited and you report 1,000 learners completing 30 minutes of training, the auditor may ask: how do you know? Session duration alone is not great evidence. “The learner clicked through and the system said they were logged in for 31 minutes” is exactly the kind of evidence that gets flagged.
A defensible time-spent measurement system tracks active engagement, not session duration. It pauses or invalidates time when there’s no learner activity for a defined period. It optionally requires the learner to verify presence (e.g., “Are you still there?”) to resume the timer. And it captures the engagement evidence in a way that’s auditable.
Note that this is not anti-learner. It’s actually pro-learner: it makes sure that the time someone genuinely spent learning is counted, while not letting the system inflate the numbers for someone who walked away.

For compliance purposes, this is a meaningful upgrade. You’re no longer reporting “the system said they were logged in for 31 minutes.” You’re reporting “the system measured 31 minutes of verified active engagement.” The difference matters when an auditor pushes on the methodology.
Even outside regulated industries, accurate time-on-task data unlocks better decisions. In course design, if learners consistently take much longer than expected, the content may be too dense. In content evaluation, courses with high completion but low engagement time may indicate clicking-through rather than learning. In manager conversations, “your team is averaging 12 minutes on a 60-minute course” is a productive starting point for a coaching discussion.
The metric also makes engagement comparisons fairer across teams and learners. A team that genuinely spends 45 minutes engaged shouldn’t lose to a team that left courses open for four hours.
If your LMS reporting treats session duration as time spent learning, you’re working with a flawed metric — possibly with regulatory exposure, definitely with distorted engagement insights. The fix isn’t to track less; it’s to track more accurately.
For Moodle and Totara users serious about compliance evidence or genuine engagement insight, look for an analytics layer that distinguishes session time from active engagement time. The difference between the two numbers is also, usually, the difference between defensible reporting and a hard conversation with your auditor.
