Using Product Descriptions for Sales Enhancements

Product descriptions can enhance a product’s appeal by providing the customer with a detailed and persuasive description about what they will be purchasing, and why it is worth purchasing in the first place.

Product descriptions are especially important in eCommerce. Customers cannot further inspect a product like they could in a brick-and-mortar store, and so descriptions are the only information that customers can use to make a decision.

Here are the benefits of including product descriptions on your website:

  • Having accurate product descriptions can also help build trust with your customers, as they can take the surprise out of online shopping. Customers will know exactly what they are purchasing.
  • Having persuasive descriptions could be the deciding factor that could convince a customer to purchase your products.
  • Having product descriptions can also help with your website’s SEO, as they often contain keywords that can help search engines rank your webpages. This can attract more viewers to your website.

If you would like to highlight a product as new, set a duration of time in which customers can see the product being promoted as new. Set Products as New is a great way to promote specific new items on your website. Not only will it draw a customer's attention to new products, but it can also keep your website looking fresh and updated. 

On the product editing page, scroll down to the Set Product as New fields. Click on the calendar icons to set your desired duration of time.

There are two different kinds of descriptions that you can add to your products: Descriptions, and short descriptions.

Descriptions

Adding or editing a product description for your Lambda Store website can help your customers learn more about a certain product. A product needs to be described in a persuasive way, as customers will need to know why they need to purchase it and what kind of benefits they can gain from owning it. 

On the Product Editing page, scroll down and expand the Content section. You can add and edit a product description through using the editor toolbar.

Short Description

Short descriptions can help your customers learn the key information about a certain product quickly. They are shown right beside the product, and are more likely to catch a customer's attention. Having short descriptions can also help give your customers a glimpse of what the product can do. 

On the product editing page, scroll down and expand the Content section. You can add and edit a short description through using the editor toolbar.

Using Photos to Enhance Your Products

Images and product photography have a huge impact on consumer behaviours. Your products can look much more appealing and attractive through using suitable images. 

According to Justuno, 93% of consumers consider visual content to be the key deciding factor in a purchasing decision. 

TIP  TIP

  • Avoid adding text to your images, or use no more than three words. Images often end up scaled down, so if you would like to add text, then you should consider how readable it could be first. 
  • There are no default image sizes, as images are automatically resized if required. Avoid heavy files and instead look for the right balance between image quality and file size.

1.  On the Lambda Store admin panel, click Catalog > Products to access the Products page. 

2.  Find your desired product on the grid, and click Edit in the Action column.

3. Scroll down and expand the Images and Videos section.

4.  Upload your image into the Add Image box. You can click on the image icon to upload an image from your files. You can also drag an image into the box to upload it. You can upload multiple images onto the same product.

TIP  TIP

When uploading the main image of a product, image zoom is activated if an image is uploaded that is larger than the image container itself. Depending on the level of zoom that you would like to achieve, the base image should be two to three times the size of the container. 

A good example size for uploading a base image is 470 by 470 pixels (without an image zoom), and 1100 by 1100 pixels (with an image zoom). 

5.  If you have uploaded multiple images, you can rearrange the position of any image by dragging its associated dragbutton  button to a new position. This is the arrangement that will be visible from the website. 

6.  If you would like to delete your image, you can click on the Delete icon at the bottom-left corner of the image.

7.  Once you are complete, click Save.

8.  To preview your product's images, click Customer View on the Admin menu on the top-right corner of the page.

Using Videos to Enhance Your Products

Adding videos to your product pages can also help influence consumer behaviours. 

According to Google, almost 50% of internet users look for product or service videos before visiting a store.

According to Business Insider, video ads have the highest average click-through rate of all digital ad formats, at 1.84%

To set up video functionality in your store, you will need a YouTube API key, and the Lambda Support team will assist with configuration.

1.  Obtain a YouTube API key to complete the set up for video. Click here for instructions on getting an API key.

2.  Contact the Support team when you have your API key, or if you are having issues obtaining it. Once the Support team has received your API key, then they will add it to your Store website settings.

3.  On the Lambda Store admin panel, click Catalog > Products to access the Products page.

4.  Find your desired product on the grid, and click Edit under the Action column.

5.  Scroll down and expand the Images and Video section, and click Add Video.

You will need to enter your YouTube API key in order to add videos.

6.  Enter the URL of the YouTube or Vimeo video. 

7.  Enter the Title and Description of the video. 

8.  To upload a Preview Image, click Choose File to upload an image.

9.  If you prefer to use the video meta data, click Get Video Information.

10.  To determine how the video is used in the store, click the checkbox of each appropriate role.

11.  Once you are complete, click Save. 

12.  To preview your product's video, click Customer View on the Admin menu on the top-right corner of the page. 

key  Getting a YouTube API Key

To obtain a YouTube API key, you must have an accessible Google account.

1.  Log in to your Google account, and navigate to the Google Cloud Console API Library.

2.  From the upper navigation bar, click Select a project to open the Select a project window. Then, click New Project on the upper-right portion of the window.

3.  In the New Project page, enter a name and browse for a folder location for your project. If you have no pre-existing folders, then you can leave the menu set to 'No Organization.'

Once you are complete, click Create.

4.  In the API Library, locate and click on  YouTube Data API v3 to Enable the API. 

5.  On the Overview page, click on Create Credentials.

6.  On the Credentials page, you will need to configure three options.

For the 'Which API are you using?' drop-down menu, select YouTube Data v3.

For the 'Where will you be calling the API from?' drop-down menu, select Web browser (Javascript).

For the 'What data will you be accessing?' option, select Public data.

Once you are complete, click What credentials do I need?

7.  You will now be given an API key to use. But first, click the Restrict Key link to restrict your API key.

8.  On the 'Restrict and rename API key' page, you will need to configure three options:

For the API key name field, enter an appropriate name for your API key.

For the Application restrictions option, select HTTP referrers (web sites).

Scroll down to the Website Restrictions section and click Add Item. Enter your store domain URL and click Done.

For the API restrictions options, select Restrict key and set the drop-down menu to YouTube Data API v3.

Once you are complete, click Save. Your API key is now fully configured.

9.  Navigate back to the Credentials page. Find your completed API key on the list, and click on its corresponding Copy button. You can then paste this key into the Lambda Store product settings.

Related Products, Up-Sells, and Cross-Sells

Related products, up-sells, and cross-sells play a crucial role in attracting customers to purchase more products. These associated products can provide your customers with additional options to purchase.

Related products are shown to customers based on the product a customer is currently viewing. Related products provide additional items to entice customers to add to their order.

An up-sell item is offered to the customer as a pricier, or higher quality alternative to the product a customer is currently viewing. Since up-selling can help to increase revenue, you would want customers to see the benefits of purchasing a higher quality alternative.

A good example of an up-sell product is a bundle product, as customers could perceive a bundle as a more efficient way of buying multiple products.

A cross-sell product acts like an 'impulse purchase' that appears in the shopping cart after a product has already been added. Cross-selling helps customers buy additional items right before check out. Cross-sell products generally belong to different product categories, but will be complementary in nature.

1.  On the Lambda Store admin panel, click Catalog > Products to access the Products page.

2.  Find your desired product on the grid, and click Edit in the Action column.

3.  Scroll down and expand the Related Products, Up-Sells, and Cross-Sells section.

4.  Click on the corresponding buttons on the right-hand side of the section.

relatedupsellcrosssellbuttons5.  Each button will redirect you to the product grid. First, find the product(s) that you are going to add. Use 'Filters' to search for the product(s) if necessary.

6.  Click on the checkbox to select the products, and click Add Selected Products.

7.  After you have added your desired products, they will be displayed in a grid. This grid will show the information and status of these products.

8.  You can move the position of these products, relative to one another, by clicking and dragging the dragbutton  button to rearrange the products.

9.  You can click Remove under the Actions column if you would like to remove these products from being shown.

10.  Once you are complete, click Save.
