Moodle Service Providers to Simplify Moodle Plugin Development

Six Companies Form the Partners of Open Source Educational Technologies (POET) Working Group to Develop Common Standards for Moodle Plugin Development

Vancouver, BC, August 4, 2015 – Six major Moodle service providers - Lambda Solutions, Nivel Siete, Remote-Learner and Blackboard’s open source companies (Moodlerooms, NetSpot and Remote-Learner UK) - have formed the Partners of Open source Educational Technologies (POET) Working Group to formulate common standards and guidelines that will improve and streamline the process for Moodle plugin development, one of the most used learning management systems (LMS) in the world.

Plugins are widely used by institutions and private organizations to customize or add new functionalities to Moodle. However, in order to have the plugins fully integrated in the different enterprise versions of Moodle available on the market, developers need to go through a full certification process with each service provider, creating unnecessary complexity and adding costs to the implementations. Thanks to the new common standards and development guidelines, any plugin certified by a POET Working Group participating company will receive expedited validation when submitted to other members, allowing institutions to save money and time.

The first set of guidelines has been already finalized in close collaboration with the development community and it is available at http://poetgroup.org/.

"The eLearning industry is changing rapidly so it is important that core learning platforms like Moodle evolve just as quickly,” said Shevy Levy, CEO at Lambda Solutions. “By collaborating with experienced learning companies we can help facilitate the innovation necessary for institutions to customize their own deployments of Moodle and better serve their learners. We also hope that other companies will join us in the near future."

“The opportunity to work with this amazing group of companies, in support of common goals, is the main driver for Remote-Learner’s involvement with this initiative,” said Ron Olsen, CEO for Remote-Learner. “We are excited to explore additional opportunities to eliminate unproductive, overlapping efforts, enabling the community to invest more time into innovation that will enhance the Moodle platform and ensure its continued success.”
