Incorporating Video-based Learning Experiences Into Your eLearning and Training Programs

Written by Lambda Solutions | Mar 26, 2019

There's little doubt within the education industry that eLearning marks the next frontier for both academic learning and corporate training. Studies have shown that learners appreciate the convenience that eLearning brings to learning experiences by allowing learners to complete and revisit material at their convenience.

This holds true in the cases of advanced VR (virtual reality) and AR (augmented reality) learning software, which provide those undergoing training the complete practical application experiences through eLearning.

And perhaps nowhere can the potential of eLearning be seen more clearly than in the incorporation of video-based learning into eLearning experiences.

Why Video-based Learning Works

Everyone knows the old adage "a picture is worth a thousand words," and extending that line of thought to video leads to a predictable conclusion. What is sometimes more glossed over is that this quote is rooted in science.

Not only do humans process visual information incredibly quickly, but experts also indicate that humans put images away in long-term memory, while relegating words to short-term memory storage. Given this information, it only follows that educational videos are a fantastic way for educators to transmit information to learners.

How You Can Incorporate Video-based Learning Into Your eLearning Experiences

When considering the potential efficacy of video-based learning, some educators may be tempted to over-incorporate it into their learning experiences. Given this impulse, it may be harder than you think to use video-based learning in your curriculum effectively, so here are some do's and don'ts for using video-based learning experiences in eLearning:

Do's Don'ts
  • Do use video-based learning to administer quizzes and increase interactivity in the classroom. For example, this 2014 study indicated that students strongly prefer interactive videos to non-interactive videos, so use interactive videos to administer quizzes and test knowledge consistently.

  • Do archive videos so that students can return to them later, as doing so provides a fantastic database for students to learn from consistently.

  • Do encourage instructors to re-watch videos of their classes to benefit from some video-based learning of their own to become even better educators.

  • Do create optional auxiliary videos for students to watch. By doing so, you can help tailor their learning experience to match their learning style, allowing fast learners to move through learning experiences quickly while providing those who could use a bit more assistance with the aid that they need in order to succeed.

  • Don't use video-based learning as a substitute for practical application. Remember, experience is still the best teacher, and in a corporate training environment, watching a video of somebody creating an Excel spreadsheet will never match up to actually having to create one on the fly. Practical application exercises, whether they occur onsite or via VR or AR, should still comprise the foundation of your eLearning experiences.

  • Don't use video-based learning for class discussions. Typically, students would rather be face-to-face when talking with one another. So, if at all possible, accommodate this preference.

All in all, video-based learning represents a stellar opportunity for educators to completely involve their students in eLearning experiences and create cohesive, effective courses for every type of learner.
