Hello from the Lambda Solutions Team! We are thrilled to kick-off this Fall 2006 update with the news that we have been selected by a few more prestigious clients, such as Rogers and Teekay Shipping, to implement Moodle and build custom online courses.
Moodle, an open source learning management system (LMS), has gained significant share in the eLearning market. The focus of this issue is centered on Moodle as there are still many questions surrounding this open source technology. This is a pretty exciting time for our company. For the past year we've been going through a fairly significant growth and we thank you for being part of our success. Enjoy our first issue!

How Lambda Leverages Open Source Technology - Moodle 101 Moodle (Modular Object-Oriented Dynamic Learning Environment) is a template-based learning management system (LMS) to which content is added. Students and tutors can customize the content according to their needs. In addition, teachers have access to full user login and activity tracking, making class management in cyberspace friendlier. Moodle's features include forums, quizzes, assignments, glossaries, and customizable reports.
Lambda Solutions, known for its expertise in Moodle, has created a unique framework, ClearView, for Moodle. LCV enhances the learner's experience with easier navigation and more dynamic interaction with the course content. This tool is unique to Lambda Solutions and is one of the core services in our portfolio.
What makes Moodle so unique and allows for such integration?
Since Moodle is open source, it is entirely supported by a global community of programmers and users. Moodle is available, free of charge, under the terms of the General Public License and has no licensing cost attached, unlike commercial software. Moodle is now used not only in traditional settings (such as K-12 and post-secondary institutions) but also in non-profit organizations and private companies.
Moodle is the most commonly used open source technology in eLearning with over 18,000 sites in 165 countries. Moodle was created as a PhD dissertation project by Martin Dougiamas who based the design on socio-constructivist pedagogy, which supports discovery-based approach to online learning.

Lambda Delivers a Third Course to BC Hydro on Safety BC Hydro, the second largest utility company in Canada, has chosen Lambda Solutions to produce an online safety course. A major factor in BC Hydro's repeat business is Lambda Solutions' ability to create learner-friendly, easily updateable courses that integrate seamlessly with the client's infrastructure.
The online course focuses on safety in an emergency situation. This e-course will be interactive and utilize a number of simulated scenarios that will respond to learners depending on their choices.
"In today's day and age, the need for such course is essential. Bringing awareness and educating one's employees on how to act in case of an emergency can potentially save lives. Our solution serves as a tool for increasing awareness and understanding among BC Hydro learners," says Shevy Levy, Lambda Solutions' President. "We are very excited about this project. It is a challenging but timely topic and it will give us an opportunity to demonstrate our knowledge, bring eLearning technology to the next level, and continue our working relationship with BC Hydro."
Their other courses for BC Hydro include a module for BC Hydro's online orientation and an overview of a 15+ module course on electric fundamentals.

Comments Jason McIvor, Director of Sales at Lambda Solutions, on the progress of the project:
Since the start of this project, we have completed three customized installations for Malaspina University-College, College of the Rockies, and Kwantlen University College. We have received positive feedback from the administrators of the various campuses. The Moodle environment provides students with a great learning experience, and the faculty a great tool for teaching.
We look forward to achieving the same for Selkirk College and the Nicola Valley Institute of Technology. We are scheduled to complete implementation for these schools just before Christmas this year.
